| SCUBA FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) |
- How soon can I become a Certified Diver?
You’ll be diving in less time than you think. Typically, you can become a PADI Open Water Diver in just 2 weekends!
- Is diving strenuous? Do I have to be in top physical shape?
If you’re in good average health and comfortable in the water, chances are you qualify NOW for scuba lessons.
- How old do you have to be?
You must be at least 15 years old to begin the PADI Open Water Diver Course. However, there is a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification for children aged 10 – 14. Junior Open Water Divers must dive with a certified parent, guardian, or PADI Professional and are limited to depths of 40 feet or shallower.
- What gear do I need?
As a minimum, you’ll need your own personal dive gear (mask, snorkel, boots, fins, weights, weight belt and a whistle) when you start scuba class.
- What’s involved with learning to dive?
Learning to dive isn’t difficult, but like any activity worth doing, it requires some training and practice.
Learning to dive is broken up into three sections:
- Knowledge Development
The training book and video clearly explains what you
need to know and shows you the key skills you’ll learn
before you practice them. In a classroom setting, your
instructor will recap all the essential information and
answer your questions.
- Confined Water Training
Conducted in a swimming pool, your confined water training is where you will learn and master the skills you’ll need to scuba dive. You’ll get truly comfortable in the water and amaze yourself with your ability to hover like an underwater helicopter and move with a minimum of effort.
- Open Water Dives
Open water training is your opportunity to experience scuba diving and apply your new skills in real-world diving conditions. The first open water dive consists of little more than having fun diving and applying your new skills with an Instructor right there to help you get the most from the experience. On later dives you’ll continue to practice the skills you mastered in the pool, and perfect skills that will help you preserve and protect the delicate underwater world.

- Where can I dive?
You can dive practically anywhere there’s water – from a swimming pool to the ocean and all points in between, including quarries, lakes, rivers and springs. Living in Houston, Texas, means you are only 2 hours away from some of the best diving in the world – the Caribbean Sea!
- How much does it cost?
Compared with getting started in other popular adventure sports and outdoor activities, learning to scuba dive is very affordable. See the typical cost breakdown below:
